Purple Tea Extract

Originally cultivated in Kenya a few decades ago, Purple Tea (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) is a newer variety of tea with reddish-purple colored leaves grown in the Kenyan highlands with high exposure to UV light. Rich in polyphenols, Purple Tea features a unique polyphenol compound known as 1,2-di-Galloyl-4,6-Hexahydroxydiphenoyl-β-D-Glucose (GHG) that is not found in other green, oolong or black teas. Compared to other tea varieties, Purple Tea has the highest content of Polyphenol antioxidants bar none. Compelling clinical studies have shown that Purple Tea Extract inhibits lipid peroxidation which occurs when lipids in the cell membrane undergo oxidative degradation. Chain reactions from lipid peroxidation may be responsible for rapidly aging skin, cell damage and inflammation. Additional studies have also highlighted the potential for Purple Tea Extract to be effective in inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase suggesting that Purple Tea Extract may have a skin lightening effect in addition to its strong antioxidant properties.
